A Review of Design Principles for Community-based Natural Resource Management Ecology and Society
Cox, Michael; Indiana University; miecox@indiana.edu; Arnold, Gwen; Indiana University; gbarnold@indiana.edu.
In 1990, Elinor Ostrom proposed eight design principles, positing them to characterize robust institutions for managing common-pool resources such as forests or fisheries. Since then, many studies have explicitly or implicitly evaluated these design principles. We analyzed 91 such studies to evaluate the principles empirically and to consider what theoretical issues have arisen since their introduction. We found that the principles are well supported empirically and that several important theoretical issues warrant discussion. We provide a reformulation of the design principles, drawing from commonalities found in the studies.

Bonamia parasites: a rapidly changing perspective on a genus of important mollusc pathogens ArchiMer
Engelsma, Marc; Culloty, Sarah C.; Lynch, Sharon A.; Arzul, Isabelle; Carnegie, Ryan B..
Organisms of the genus Bonamia are intracellular protistan parasites of oysters. To date, 4 species have been described (B. ostreae, B. exitiosa, B. perspora and B. roughleyi), al though the status of B. roughleyi is controversial. Introduction especially of B. ostreae and B. exitiosa to naïve host populations has been shown to cause mass mortalities in the past and has had a dramatic impact on oyster production. Both B. ostreae and B. exitiosa are pathogens notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the European Union. Effective management of the disease caused by these pathogens is complicated by the extensive nature of the oyster production process and limited options for disease control of the cultured stocks in open water. This...

Complementary approaches to diagnosing marine diseases: a union of the modern and the classic ArchiMer
Burge, Colleen A.; Friedman, Carolyn S.; Getchell, Rodman; House, Marcia; Lafferty, Kevin D.; Mydlarz, Laura D.; Prager, Katherine C.; Sutherland, Kathryn P.; Renault, Tristan; Kiryu, Ikunari; Vega-thurber, Rebecca.
Linking marine epizootics to a specific etiology is notoriously difficult. Recent diagnostic successes show that marine disease diagnosis requires both modern, cutting-edge technology (e.g. metagenomics, quantitative realtime PCR) and more classic methods (e.g. transect surveys, histopathology and cell culture). Here, we discuss how this combination of traditional and modern approaches is necessary for rapid and accurate identification of marine diseases, and emphasize how sole reliance on any one technology or technique may lead disease investigations astray. We present diagnostic approaches at different scales, from the macro (environment, community, population and organismal scales) to the micro (tissue, organ, cell and genomic scales). We use disease...

Diagnosing Institutional Fit: a Formal Perspective Ecology and Society
Cox, Michael; Dartmouth College; michael.e.cox@dartmouth.edu.
I attempt to demonstrate that the concept of institutional fit and the closely related approach of institutional diagnosis can be improved with the process of formalization. In this context, the concept of fit is interpreted as a way of expressing certain theoretical propositions that relate a set of variables with each other and with an outcome. This perspective is demonstrated through the use of the Web Ontology Language to express several "theories of fit." Using a formal language to describe types of fit and their associated theories is argued to have much potential for advancing the scientific study of social-ecological systems.

Field validation of a Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana exo-antigens ELISA for diagnosing tegumentary leishmaniasis in regions of Leishmania (Viannia) predominance BJID
Soares,Killarney Ataide; Urdapilleta,Ada Amália Ayala; Santos,Gilcilene Maria dos; Carneiro,Andréa Lisboa; Gomes,Ciro Martins; Roselino,Ana Maria; Sampaio,Raimunda Nonata Ribeiro.
Background: Several tests are performed to obtain better accuracy when diagnosing American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL). It is believed that antigens released via secretion, excretion and metabolism are more specific than are antigens released by the lysis of Leishmaniaparasites. Such antigens are known as exo-antigens (exo-Ag) and are formed from products released by cultured parasites in a way that is similar to that in which they cause infections in hosts. Objective: We attempted to validate a Leishmania mexicanaELISA exo-Ag for ATL diagnosis in Midwestern Brazil. Methods: A total of 281 patients were included in the study. We analysed pre-treatment blood from 98 ATL patients; out of those, 85.7% and 14.3% had cutaneous and mucosal forms,...

Modified Carba NP test for the detection of carbapenemase production in gram-negative rods: optimized handling of multiple samples BJM
Campana,Eloiza H.; Chuster,Stephanie G.; Silva,Isadora R. da; Paschoal,Raphael P.; Bonelli,Raquel R.; Moreira,Beatriz M.; Picão,Renata C..
Abstract The modified Carba NP test presented here may be a valuable tool for laboratories interested in investigating a large number of carbapenemase-producing bacteria in a less-costly way. The test was evaluated against 48 carbapenemase-producing and carbapenemase-non-producing gram-negative bacteria. No false–positive results were obtained, but false-negative results were observed with OXA-23- and GES-carbapenemase-producing isolates. Aeromonas sp. are not testable by Modified Carba NP.

QuasiGeostrophic Diagnosis of Mixed-Layer Dynamics Embedded in a Mesoscale Turbulent Field ArchiMer
Chavanne, Cedric P.; Klein, Patrice.
A quasigeostrophic model is developed to diagnose the three-dimensional circulation, including the vertical velocity, in the upper ocean from high-resolution observations of sea surface height and buoyancy. The formulation for the adiabatic component departs from the classical surface quasigeostrophic framework considered before since it takes into account the stratification within the surface mixed layer that is usually much weaker than that in the ocean interior. To achieve this, the model approximates the ocean with two constant stratification layers: a finite-thickness surface layer (or the mixed layer) and an infinitely deep interior layer. It is shown that the leading-order adiabatic circulation is entirely determined if both the surface...

Seroconversion and seroreactivity patterns of dairy goats naturally exposed to caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus in Brazil Ciência Rural
Castro,Roberto Soares; Leite,Rômulo Cerqueira; Azevedo,Edisio Oliveira de; Resende,Maurício; Gouveia,Aurora Maria Guimarães.
A labelled avidin-biotin ELISA (lab-ELISA) using repeated serum samples of goats showed a progressive seroconversion with higher seroconversion rate at the period going from the beginning of the breeding up to the last half of lactation (35.0%), compared to that recorded at the beginning of breeding (17.8%)(p<0.05). Furthermore, the seroreactivity pattern, evaluated by a lab-ELISA standard-curve with serum samples collected at 30-40 days intervals during 12 months, was caracterized by high individual variability. No seroreversion was observed and there were higher titers in the group of animals which delivered kids and established a lactation period (n=6; mean titre=913.4 units) compared to the group of goats that failed to conceived (n=4; mean...

Speaking Stata: Graphing model diagnostics AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Plotting diagnostic information calculated from residuals and fitted values is a long-standard method for assessing models and seeking ways of improving them. This column focuses on the statistical mainstream defined by regression models for continuous responses, treated in a broad sense to include (for example) generalized linear models. After some comments on the history of such ideas (and even their anthropology and psychology), the commands available in official Stata are reviewed, and a modeldiag package is introduced. A detailed example on fuelwood yield from fallow areas in Nigeria illustrates a variety of general points and specific tips.
